nictoglobe

Origins

Nictoglobe started around 1982 as a stenciled paper edited by Michel and Andreas Jacobs (A. Andreas) both from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It was exclusively and privately distributed on the local night bus service by its contributors. Some extant original folio's are included in the archive of The International Institute of Social History (IISG), Amsterdam.

Before Internet

The printed edition was followed up by electronic editions on Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's) hosted on a 'SuperBrain' computer running CP/M: 'Go East Young Man!'. Later editions were put on MSXII systems:'Madame Suhein, the fictitious female owner of a Syrian brothel' and finally on TeleText modules. In this period we had a kind of co-operation with 'Deepbase', another BBS, originating from Amsterdam based Radio 100 and DFM roots: 'DMS-III, a subversion of the handbook of modern psychiatry', see pictures. A spin-off of this co-operation was the participation with the Circuit du Theatre festival with Gerausche aus der Helle, an electronic perfomance/installation. Amsterdam 1989, cf: 'Installations'.

The Internet Era

With the arrival of ARPAnet in Europe, late 80's, begin 90's new editions were placed on the Internet. After starting our own experimental gallery, 'Gallery d+n+r', in a semi-squatted office, we showed the work of our featured artists also online.

Beyond Internet

Trying to escape the rather boring immateriality of internet presence, new ways are being developed to continue our mission. New collaborations started, highligthing in the 'Ey' Ar' shows and the founding of the 'Brahamian Intelligence Service' in 2004. Other examples are: 'Cinema Beyonce': nomadic Cinema,'Fast Beaming': using the city as a public screen 'Digital Puppetry': using cellphones to manipulate huge outside projections. And a CoolMediaHotTalkShow about Creative Resistance - New Media as Soft Arms, De Balie - Centre for Culture and Politics, Amsterdam 2007.
More information about these and other projects is available elsewhere on this site.
Nictoglobe is edited and published by A. Andreas with the kind cooperation of members of the Brahamian Intelligence Service.
The Brahamian Intelligence Service counts among her members a.o.: Hero Werkman, Brenda Weverling, Judith V. (the Frontline Princess), Michel Jacobs and Nicole Cohen (La Resocialiste).
The Brahamian Intelligence Service resides in the Ambassy of Eleutheropolis
